Anyone collect $20, $10 and $5 liberties?
I am doing some research on the liberty head series. Anyone on GIM know much on these? Built a nice little position of the Indians but the liberties seem to have such wider choices and dates.
Any info or articles online in regards to dates and analysis would be appricated. |
Re: Anyone collect $20, $10 and $5 liberties?
They're more common than Indian Head gold coins and the St Gaudens of course. Their looks are much more coin like and less appealing (personally I think the Indians and St Gaudens are unworthy of being merely called "coins").
Picture this: the liberty double eagle was struck every year from 1850 till 1907. Rare years aside, there are plenty of regular issues frequently offered. Coins minted in Philly and San Francisco are frequent. With a little luck you can buy a liberty double eagle with a small premium over spot, especially if its a common year like 1904-p. The St Gaudens was minted from 1907 to 1916 in San Francisco, Denver and Philly and again from 1920 to 1933 (coins from 1920, 1921 and 1929 onwards being out of reach for the average collector). The amount of coins bearing St Gaudens beautiful design is not only less, mintages are smaller and many more were lost when gold was recalled from Federal Reserve banks and other vaults in 1933. All of which was melted down. While it is speculation, one may assume the amount of St Gaudens coins headed to the melting pot exceeds those of the liberty design. Liberty coins circulated among others and went through many hands. Finding a heavily worn liberty double eagle's not a difficult task; try to find a circulated, surfaces smoothed and worn, St Gaudens double eagle. It's much more difficult to find such an example compared to a pristine MS-65. |

I like them a lot, if you can find them anywhere close to spot BUY THEM! The premiums have really gone up on these in the last year. There is nothing like having a 100 year old gold coin in your hand!

Re: Anyone collect $20, $10 and $5 liberties?
I collect the $10s & $20s.
I find them a fine coin - however the PREMIUMS have doubled recently. http://www.pcgs.com/prices/ Maybury thinks that the NUMISMATICS coins are really going from HERE. The reason is simple - the folks FLOCKING to inherent GOLD money will want the "certification" of PCGS/NGC once they ask a few questions about gold. Frankly I used to think of them as one-thousand dollar bills in slabs last year. Now it's more like three to five thousand dollar bills SOON the $20s in both the Liberties & Saints. Kinda scares me in a funny sort of way. Like how do I trust a buyer WHEN the DOW hits say $20,000 to $40,000 grand and a Saint brings the same or even double or triple? And I might want to get into the DOW again? :Surrender::Surrender: |
Re: Anyone collect $20, $10 and $5 liberties?
I almost exclusively collect the pre-33 liberties as my main source of gold. Yes, the premiums have been very high lately, but the past few weeks they've been going down (premiums for common date $20 pieces have fallen about $100 in the last few weeks). Here's some advice: if you're buying raw coins, check the rims!!! So many of these coins are ex-jewelry pieces, and if you only look at the obverse and reverse you might miss some tiny solder marks on the rim or uniform nicks every 90 degrees showing it was in a bezel. I saw a $5 gold where a previous owner tried to scrape off all the solder and used a knife to put the reeds back into the edge. It was well done, but obviously tampered with and the guy selling the coin pretended not to notice ("oh really? Well I suppose it might have been a jewelry piece at one time..."). But if you try to resell, dealers will notice this right away and then offer you spot and nothing more.

Love the double eagles. Wife thought I was nuts in the mid-late 90's and getting my interest back in coin collecting and going on this weird auction site called eBay and bidding, sometimes buying 3 a week.

thanks for the advice guys! the premiums on the liberties are damn high. I am looking for ms63/62 so they are no where near spot. the $5's are a interesting series. trying to put together a 20, 10, 5 and 2.5 is gonna be good fun with lots of researching.

Eso -
The premiums are really quite higher than I want to pay right now. Remember the double eagles also only contain .9675 ounces of gold. Tack another $30 of premium at these prices. Worn ones could possibly weight a few percentage points less. |
Re: Anyone collect $20, $10 and $5 liberties?
I agree, especially on the graded coins.
I haven't taken the step of buying a raw coin yet, just trying to get a understanding of the grades for raw coins right now. Anything I need to particularly look out for? Quote:

Re: Anyone collect $20, $10 and $5 liberties?
I was just checking the 1972 25th Anniversary Red Book - and across the board the $20 gold pieces have gone up around 20 times. About the same as the money supply.
Some say they will go up crazy (up to 5000%) from here as the inflation printing presses make the dollar go into freefall. Inflation is not prices rising - it's the US Dollar falling in value. It's a monetary issue - like in the pre-1980 dictionaries - before they were dumbed down. :ok::111: |
